Exposed wires threaten safety: Open junction boxes on city light posts pose electrocution risk; Residents urge for urgent repairs and underground cabling
Ranchi: Open junction boxes on light posts at several busy locations across the city are raising serious safety concerns, with residents warning that exposed wires could cause accidents and electrocution, especially during inclement weather.
The exposed boxes were spotted near Women’s College, Ranchi University, Jail Road Chowk, Dangratoli, Lalpur Chowk, Kantatoli, Morabadi Chowk and even outside the residences of senior officers.
Residents said that many of these places witness frequent movement of commuters, students, office-goers and children.
“Open junction boxes are dangerous. Children, office-goers and others pass through these areas all the time, and the exposed wires pose a great risk,” said Puja Singh, a resident of Burdwan Compound. She said all electric cables should be laid underground.
Nikhil Lakhra, a hotel employee, said that all open junction boxes should be secured immediately to prevent accidents.
Residents pointed out that the exposed boxes and hanging wires are also an eyesore and undermine ongoing beautification efforts.
“Nobody seems to know about the consequences of open wires, and it causes visual pollution too,” said Sanit Kumar, a pedestrian at Jail More.
An official of Ranchi Municipal Corporation, requesting anonymity, said replacement of old junction boxes is underway. “Work has been completed from Birsa Chowk to Argora Chowk. Work is on from Argora Chowk to Ratu Road. A total of 262 junction boxes are being replaced, of which more than 100 have been completed,” the official said.
