Dhanbad: In a bid to curb the rising number of road accidents and instil a sense of responsibility towards traffic rules among citizens, Dhanbad police on Friday organised an extensive road safety awareness programme at Memco More under the nationwide Road Safety Month. The busy intersection was transformed into a platform for public outreach, where the value of life took centre stage over routine traffic enforcement. The programme featured street plays, songs, short films and PPT presentations, all designed to convey how a moment of negligence on the road can devastate an entire family.

During the campaign, motorists found violating traffic rules—such as riding without helmets or seat belts—were stopped but not fined. Instead of issuing challans, police officials encouraged them to participate in the awareness programme. Addressing the gathering, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Prabhat Kumar said in 2025 alone, Dhanbad district recorded around 350 road accidents, claiming nearly 250 lives. Calling the figures alarming, he said these were not just numbers but stories of broken dreams and grieving families.Announcing a special enforcement drive from Feb 1, the SSP said helmets would be mandatory for both riders on two-wheelers, seat belt violations would invite strict action, and vehicles with fancy number plates or modified silencers would be seized.
