Michael Brennan was in position to win his first title as a pro until he was disqualified from the Farmers Insurance Open for a serious rules violation. One of the more promising young talents in the game, the 23-year-old opened his round at Torrey Pines with a solid two-under-par 70 and, while he was looking good to make the cut, had even higher aspirations. However, what should have been a fairly easy homecoming turned into an excruciating wake-up call, a reminder of just how cruel the pettifoggery of professional golf can be. The impressive day for Brennan ended almost before it began when officials disqualified him from the tournament after the round for a violation involving equipment.

What led to Michael Brennan’s disqualification

It was a breach of Model Local Rule G-11, which covers the type and size of green-reading materials allowed for use in competition. If implemented, golfers would be allowed to only use permissible yardage books and hole-location sheets, with any form of handwriting only their own notes made at any time while practicing or playing.
Brennan's materials were "more than what is permissible under the rule," according to tournament officials. The actual details weren't made public, but it was serious enough to receive a two-stroke penalty, followed by disqualification for a second violation.
And that is a rule that is heavily enforced on the PGA Tour as governing bodies continue to try to stem the tide of the reliance on sophisticated green-mapping programs and other data-driven devices. Brennan had completed his round when the violation was identified, but he was still taken off the leaderboard.

A tough setback in an otherwise promising season

Brennan had been gaining momentum over the past year, making this ruling a setback. Having solidified his place on the PGA Tour with impressive outings on the secondary circuit, he added his first win as a pro late last season and rode into '26 with momentum. It was just the third tournament of the new season for him, which begins with the Farmers Insurance Open, held yearly at Torrey Pines Golf Course. His on-course game looked promising with a few flashes, but the DQ taught him a lesson about how cruel professional golf can be on the operational side of the game.
