Doctors remove over 10kg tumour from patient’s back

Raipur: Doctors have successfully removed a 10.3 kg tumour from a patient's back—among the largest reported in India—marking a significant advancement in complex tumour surgery.The surgery was performed at Bhim Rao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital, Raipur, where the surgery department carried out a complex procedure to excise the 10.3 kg tumour. The patient had been living with the growth for nearly 15 years, suffering from persistent pain, restricted mobility and social discomfort.The operation, led by hospital superintendent and laparoscopic surgeon Dr Santosh Sonkar along with head of the surgery department Dr Manju Singh, marks a significant achievement for the state's public healthcare system.According to medical records, while tumours weighing up to 8 kg have been documented in India, the removal of a 10.3 kg growth is considered an exceptional case. The patient had difficulty performing basic daily activities such as sitting, standing and sleeping due to the size of the tumour. The surgery required precise coordination to manage risks such as excessive bleeding and tissue damage.The operation was conducted by a team of senior surgeons including Dr Rajendra Ratre, Dr Mayank Bhushan Mishra, and senior resident Dr Preksha Jain.The anaesthesia department played a crucial role in ensuring the success of the procedure. The patient remained stable after surgery and has been discharged following a successful recovery.
