PUNE: Union agriculture minister
Sharad Pawar on Friday said elections are necessary in democracy; however felicitation of veteran actors and artists in annual meets is a better way than asking them contest elections.
Pawar was talking in the context of recently-held elections for an artists' group, where contesting candidates had made low-level allegations against each other.
Pawar said: "The annual meet of theatre artists is going to be organized at Baramati by the end of this year. I am happy for the unanimous selection of veteran actor Mohan Agashe. It would be better if other artists' organizations follow it."
He was speaking after felicitating noted actor Shriram Lagoo with the Rajarshi Shahu Kala Gaurav Award. The award is instituted by Satara-based Bharatiya Bhatke Vimukta Vikas and Sanshodhan Samstha, headed by Padmashri awardee
Laxman Mane, who is is active in social uplift and as a part of it, his organization has felicitated Lagoo.
Lagoo has a 60-year-long career in experimental theatre, mainstream theatre and Bollywood films. He has also participated in various charitable activities.
