Drunk BBA student suffers injuries as car crashes into railings falls off Garware bridge
Pune: A BBA student (19) from Kiwale suffered minor injuries after his car crashed into the railings of Garware bridge on JM Road and fell on the plants along the subway below around 1.30am on Monday.
The student’s medical test revealed that he was driving the car in an inebriated state.
“The student, pursuing a BBA course in a prominent college in the city, stays in a rented flat of a township in Kiwale. He hails from Jaipur in Rajasthan. We have registered an FIR against the student for rash and negligent driving, and for damaging public property,” said senior inspector Girisha Nimbalkar of the Deccan Gymkhana police.
“The student attended a party at a restaurant in Koregaon Park. Thereafter, he started driving his car towards Kiwale. He failed to control the car while negotiating the right turn on the Garware bridge and it crashed into the railings of the bridge,” Nimbalkar said.
“The car fell onto plants and mud in the subway, which saved the student. He suffered minor injuries in the accident,” she said.
There were six accidents on the bridge In the past two years. Two two-wheeler riders died. “Lives can be saved if the height of the bridge’s railings is increased,” Nimbalkar said.
Most of the accidents occurred when vehicles were negotiating the right turn on the bridge while heading towards Good Luck Chowk from JM Road. Only one accident, involving a biker, occurred when he was travelling from Khandojibaba Chowk towards Good Luck Chowk.
