City gets heavy late night rain, yellow alert for ghats
Pune: Parts of the city received heavy rain late on Sunday nigh coupled with lightning and thunder. Intermittent rain continued in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad for the better part of Saturday night and Sunday, with Chinchwad recording 69mm showers between 8.30am on Saturday and 5.30pm on Sunday.During the same period, the IMD's Shivajinagar observatory recorded 13.8mm rain, Talegaon (15mm), Hadapsar (13.5mm) and Magarpatta (10mm). The rainfall in the remaining parts of the city and district was sparse.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a yellow alert (heavy rainfall of over 64mm) for isolated places in the ghat areas of Pune and the neighbourhood on Sept 15. The Met department has also sounded a yellow alert till Sept 18 for isolated parts across Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada and Vidarbha.An IMD bulletin issued on Sunday afternoon said the prevailing weather condition is influenced by a low-pressure area over north Telangana and the adjoining parts of the Vidarbha region in Maharashtra. The same further stretches over parts of south Madhya Maharashtra."For the next two days, there will be rain in most parts of Konkan and Goa, which includes Mumbai; Madhya Maharashtra, which stretches from Nashik in the north to Kolhapur down south with Pune in the middle; Marathwada and Vidarbha," the bulletin stated.An orange alert has also been sounded for Ratnagiri and Raigad districts for the next 24 hours. "Conditions are favourable for the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from some more parts of Rajasthan and some parts of Punjab and Gujarat during the next two to three days," said a Met department official.Meanwhile, three out of four dams that provide water to the Pune areas received rainfall. The catchment areas of Varasgaon recorded 21mm, while Panshet (20mm) and Temghar (3mm) received showers. At present, the total storage of the dams is 29.09 TMC, 99.79% compared to their total capacity.
