Patna: A 30-year-old married woman was allegedly set on fire by her in-laws on Saturday night in Patna’s Zakariapur area under the jurisdiction of Ramakrishna Nagar police station. The victim, identified as Shivangi Sharma, wife of a lawyer, Anshu Kumar, was admitted to the Nalanda Medical College and Hospital for treatment, police said.
According to Shivangi’s eight-year-old daughter, her grandparents—Arun Singh, a retired govt employee and Sushma Singh—allegedly poured petrol on her mother and set her ablaze with a matchstick. Recounting the horror, the girl said, “Grandmother and grandfather poured petrol on mummy and lighted a matchstick. She screamed and ran to the bathroom to douse the fire, but she was badly burnt by then.”
After the attack, her in-laws reportedly fled downstairs, locked themselves in their room, and have been absconding since then. Shivangi, who managed to douse the fire in the bathroom, told the police that her father-in-law held her hands while her mother-in-law poured petrol and set her ablaze.
SHO of Ram Krishna Nagar, Ashutosh Jha, confirmed that a case was filed against Arun and Sushma based on Shivangi’s statement. “This is a domestic dispute case, and we are investigating the matter. The police are searching for the absconding in-laws. We also talked to Shivangi’s daughter, who said that her grandparents, father, and uncle set her mother ablaze after a heated argument,” he said.
He added, “The woman earlier also had filed a case against her in-laws. The police went to the crime scene to gather evidence. Further action will be taken after the probe.”
Shivangi married Anshu in 2016, and they have a daughter.
