Rare earth survey in Nawada to be completed in 6 months: Union minister
Gaya: Union minister of state (independent charge) for science, technology and earth sciences, Jitendra Singh, on Wednesday informed the Lok Sabha that the ongoing survey for the exploration of rare earth materials in Nawada district of Magadh division would be completed within the next six months.
The exploration, which includes the search for key rare earth elements such as lithium, is being conducted by the Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research under the Department of Atomic Energy.
Responding to a question raised by Nawada MP Vivek Thakur, the minister said the G-4 stage geological and radiometric survey was underway, and follow-up action would be taken based on the survey’s findings.
Welcoming the assurance, the Nawada MP said rare earth elements were crucial for the country’s mineral security and would boost development in Nawada while creating job opportunities both in the district and across the state.
Highlighting the significance of rare earth elements in the current global geopolitical landscape, Thakur underlined their importance in sectors such as electric vehicles, semiconductors, renewable energy and defence.
He added that the presence of granite, pegmatite and mica rocks in neighbouring Jharkhand districts, including Koderma, indicated the potential concentration of other valuable rare earth materials in the region, including Nawada.
The minister clarified that no exploration activities were being carried out in Sheikhpura district. On the MP’s demand for a ban on illegal mining in the area, he said the issue fell under the jurisdiction of the state govt, and the Union govt had limited scope to intervene.Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Valentine's day wishes, messages and gift idea !
