Patna: Parents of a medical aspirant, who succumbed during treatment at a local hospital after being rushed there from her hostel room, where she was found unconscious, in the Chitragupt Nagar police station area on Sunday evening, staged a protest at Kargil Chowk here on Monday. They alleged that the girl was sexually assaulted.
However, police said the death may have been caused by an overdose of sleeping pills.
Patna SP (East) Parichay Kumar said a gynaecologist who examined the girl found no evidence of sexual assault, and her statement during treatment was recorded under the e-Sakshya system. “Urine analysis detected sleeping pills in her body, and similar pills were recovered from her room. Investigators are probing their source and usage. CCTV footage from the hostel and surrounding areas showed no signs of foul play, and the hard drive has been seized for forensic examination,” he said.
He added that examination of her cellphone revealed searches related to poisons, including information on the effects and lethality of sleeping pill overdoses.
“The postmortem was conducted by a panel of doctors, and viscera have been preserved for chemical and toxicological analysis,” Kumar said on Monday.
Police said further action would depend on the postmortem report.
