Nitish’s son Nishant joins JD(U), vows to strengthen party

Patna: Chief minister Nitish Kumar’s son, Nishant Kumar, joined the JD(U) on Sunday, stating that he would work as an active party worker to further strengthen the organisation.

In his first speech at the JD(U) office, Nishant assured the party leadership that he would try his best to live up to the trust that workers, the party and the public have placed in him.




The 50-year-old alumnus of BIT Mesra was inducted during a specially organised programme at the party headquarters in Patna, attended by several senior leaders. JD(U) national working president Sanjay Kumar Jha formally inducted him by handing over the membership slip.

Addressing party workers, Nishant referred to his father’s decision to go to the Rajya Sabha, calling it a personal choice that the family respects. He said he would continue working under Nitish’s guidance and would focus on strengthening the organisation. He also credited the CM for significant work done for Bihar over the past two decades, saying people would not forget his contributions to the state’s development.

Nishant said he was proud of what his father had done in the last 20 years and that he would take the development work to the masses, drawing applause from leaders and workers.

Later, speaking to reporters, Nishant said he would tour all districts and meet JD(U) district presidents to discuss ways to strengthen the party.

His arrival at the JD(U) office drew a large, enthusiastic crowd. Wearing a white kurta-pyjama and flip-flops, he was welcomed by workers from across the state. Some workers arrived on decorated horses and carried placards reading “Nishant hai to nischint hain” (Nishant’s presence brings reassurance). Roads leading to the headquarters were lined with posters featuring Nishant alongside Nitish.

After taking membership, Nishant offered prayers at Mahavir Mandir in Patna and visited a ‘dargah’ near the Patna high court, where he distributed sweets to reporters. He said, “Ishwar, Allah and Waheguru, all are the same,” adding that his father accommodated all religions in policy decisions and that he would also try to do the same. He also paid floral tributes at the statue of socialist icon Jayaprakash Narayan in the state capital.

Reacting over Nishant’s entry into JD(U), the party state president Umesh Singh Kushwaha said, “Although Nishant is formally taking party membership today, the values and ideology of Nitish and JD(U) are already reflected in his personality and conduct.”

Meanwhile, RJD president Lalu Prasad’s daughter Rohini Acharya took a jibe at Nitish. She wrote on X, “Chacha ji... where has your hollow argument and absurd theory on dynasty politics, said in reference to others, disappeared? — There has always been a big gap between your words and actions. To be honest, you have been the epitome of political and ideological contradiction, on which this saying fits perfectly — ‘Par updesh kushal bahutere’ (Many are skilled at preaching to others).”

Congress Rajya Sabha member Akhilesh Prasad Singh welcomed Nishant’s induction into the JD(U) and offered him best wishes.
