Upon receiving the information, DSP (West) AC Gyani and SHO Maniyari JP Gupta arrived at the crime spot with their team. The accused was arrested and the weapon was also seized.
The police sent the body to the SKMCH for a postmortem, while the forensic science laboratory (FSL) team was called to collect evidence from the spot.
Maniyari SHO told this reporter that the incident took place around 3.30am while the victim was asleep in her room. “The accused woke her up and hit her head with a rod. Then he tried to strangled her. When he could not succeed, he slit her throat with a knife. He stabbed her until the head was nearly severed from her body. His son informed the police about the incident, following which the arrest was made,” he said.
“During interrogation, the accused confessed to his crime, stating that he was angry with his wife because of her illicit relationship with other men.
They got married 30 years ago and have a son and a daughter. For 15 years, the man lived in another state and worked as a labourer. He returned to his hometown about one-and-a-half-year ago. He was aware of his wife’s extra-marital affair when he was away and asked her to mend her ways when he returned home. The accused said in his statement that despite his repeated requests, she continued to maintain relationship with other men,” the SHO said.
He added: “About two days ago, the husband and wife had a dispute over the same issue, and she went with another man. His son also sided with his mother, following which Mahto orchestrated the plan to kill his wife.”
