Gaya: District magistrate Shashank Shubhankar has instructed officials to expedite the work of North Koel canal project to meet the March 31 deadline. The DM conducted an inspection of the inter-state project from Sitahal village to Neema in Amas block of Gaya district on Tuesday.
In Gaya, the project is being executed in about 6 km. Upon completion, the project will increase irrigation capacity for about 30,000 hectares of land in at least five blocks of the district, including Amas, Gurua, Guraru, Konch and Paraiya.

The DM said, “This is an important inter-state irrigation and water resources project between Jharkhand and Bihar, being constructed at a cost of Rs1367.61 crore, which will boost agriculture in Gaya and Aurangabad.”
Work is going on in 11 structures out of total 19, including single-lane and double-lane bridges and super passage.
“Ensure that paving work of the canal is started within seven days and the work on remaining eight structures is expedited,” the DM said during the inspection. Engineers of water resources department and the construction company executing the project besides other officials accompanied the DM during the inspection.
The source of North Koel river is Chhotanagpur plateau. The stream of the river further flows from canals.
