City erupts in celebration as India storm into T20 World Cup semifinal
Patna: The streets of Patna, along with restaurants, cafés and homes, erupted in celebration late Sunday night as India secured a place in the T20 World Cup semifinals with a high-stakes victory over the West Indies. Chasing a formidable target of 196 at Eden Gardens, the national side overcame early setbacks to clinch the win, transforming the city’s day-long anticipation into jubilant public celebrations. From the high-rises of Nehru Path to the narrow lanes of Boring Road, firecrackers and cheers marked the end of a “do-or-die” encounter that kept residents glued to their screens for hours.
The atmosphere was tense during the first half of the chase when openers Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan departed cheaply, leaving India at 41 for 2. Ravi Rathore, who watched the match at a community screening, said, “My heart was racing when Kishan got out because we were banking so much on that local start, but the way Sanju Samson took charge changed the entire energy of the room.” He added, “Bumrah’s two wickets in one over earlier in the evening gave us hope, but chasing nearly 10 an over against the Windies' pace was nerve-wracking until the very end.”
As the innings progressed, the partnership between Samson and Tilak Varma became the focal point for fans gathered at commercial hubs. A resident of Bailey Road said, “When Suryakumar Yadav fell, I thought the pressure might get to the younger players, but Tilak Varma's three consecutive boundaries proved we were still in the hunt.” He added, “Watching them handle the dew and the pressure so calmly was the highlight of the match for everyone here.”
The victory triggered celebrations across cafés and residential colonies. A Boring Road resident who hosted a viewing party said, “India vs West Indies on March 1 lived up to every bit of the hype, and we kept the streaming going long after the match to watch the post-match presentations.”
In neighbourhood gatherings, the win was seen as a collective moment of pride. A resident said, “Watching the win at home while enjoying snacks made the Sunday holiday perfect. We planned this get-together all week, and seeing the team qualify for the semi-finals makes the upcoming week feel much more positive for the whole city.”
With this win, Patna joined the rest of the country in looking forward to the semi-final round. The city, which began the day in nervous anticipation, ended it in exuberant celebration, reflecting cricket fever at its peak.
