Bihar now Maoist-free with surrender of top rebel: Government
Patna: The govt on Wednesday claimed that Bihar has become a Maoist-free state with the surrender of Suresh Koda alias Mustakim before the Special Task Force (STF) and the deputy inspector general of police in Munger. Suresh, a member of the special area committee (SAC) who had been absconding for 25 years, carried a reward of Rs 3 lakh. His surrender on Wednesday, according to the police, came after sustained anti-Maoist operations and implementation of the state govt’s surrender and rehabilitation policy. Kundan Krishnan, director general, operations and intelligence, claimed, “With this surrender, there are no more armed, active left-wing extremists in Bihar. Strict monitoring will continue so that the state remains free of Maoists.”
Suresh handed over two Insas rifles, one AK-47, one AK-56 rifle and 505 rounds of ammunition, including 215 Insas, 197 SLR and 93 AK-47 cartridges. Ten magazines were also recovered. Sixty criminal cases were registered against him in Munger, Lakhisarai and Jamui districts. His record includes the 2008 and 2010 killings of village watchmen, a 2012 explosion at the Khaira block office, and the 2014 abduction of workers in Jamui.
He was also linked to the 2017 murder of a deputy mukhiya’s husband in Lakhisarai, multiple killings in 2018 including two brothers in Barhat and an SSB jawan, arson attacks on construction vehicles in 2018 and 2021, the 2019 murders in Chanan, and the 2021 killing of a newly elected mukhiya in Munger. He was involved in several armed encounters with STF and CoBRA forces between 2016 and 2022.
The surrender followed that of Bahadur Koda, Narayan Koda and Binod Koda on Dec 28, 2025, and Bhola Koda in July 2025. Under the rehabilitation scheme, Suresh will receive a Rs 3 lakh reward, Rs 5 lakh incentive and Rs 10,000 per month for 36 months, totalling Rs 3.6 lakh. An additional Rs 71,515 was given for surrendered weapons.
