As monthlong Ramzan begins, Sabzibagh market abuzz with rise in trade & footfall
Patna: The lanes of Sabzibagh and the surrounding parts of the city witnessed a significant surge in activity as Thursday was the first day of fasting (roza) for the holy month of Ramzan.
Preparations that began a week ago have gain momentum, with streets buzzing with activities and stalls operating round the clock to cater to shoppers of Ramzan.
The shops have stored fresh bakarkhanis, biscuits and lachchas, while bakeries have scaled up the production to meet the spike in demand.
Samiul Ahmed, a bakery owner, said, “The demand for naans, bakarkhanis, and biscuits is so high that I have to hire extra workers. Naans are priced between Rs50 and Rs200, while bakarkhani costs between Rs25 and Rs250.” From piles of sewai (vermicelli) and tasbeeh (prayer beads) to aromatic itrs, topis, headscarves, and new kurta-pyjamas, the variety of goods on display reflects people’s readiness for the month-long observance.
In the dry fruit aisles, vendors are reporting rapid sales of date varieties sourced from across the Middle East. Mohd Asim, a dry fruit vendor in the city, said: “Ajwa, Kimia, Burni, Medjool, and Mazafati are high in demand, and they are flying off the shelves. Prices for local to exported dates range between Rs100 and Rs1,500 per kg.” He added, “Ajwa is the most sought-after variety due to its religious significance.”
Fruit vendors are also doing brisk business, with demand for seasonal items on the rise. Apples are selling for Rs 150-220 per kg, pomegranates for Rs 140-250/kg, and bananas for Rs 40-60 per dozen. Watermelons, essential for iftar, are priced at Rs 25-40 per kg. Mohd Wasi Khan, a fruit vendor, said: “The footfall at our stalls has increased, and business is booming.” Ayesha Khan, a resident of Alamganj, bought two bottles of roohafzah and added, “During this month, devotees fast from dawn to dusk, refraining from food and water while engaging in prayers and spiritual reflection. It is a time of devotion, and we prepare ourselves accordingly.”
With a large number of people attending Taraweeh (night prayers) at local mosques, the city is witnessing increased activity.
Maulana Mohd Alam Quasmi said, “The holy month of Ramzan signifies growth and prosperity. Observing a fast for an entire month not only has a holy significance, but it is also beneficial for human beings as it detoxes the body.” He urged people to indulge in charity during Ramzan and help the poor.
