‘Pushed off terrace for dowry’: Deepika Nagar’s family demands fast-track justice; hunt on for absconding sisters-in-law
NOIDA: The family of a 24-year-old woman who died after falling from the third floor of her in-laws’ house in Greater Noida’s Jalpura village has demanded a fast-track court trial. They alleged Deepika Nagar was tortured for dowry and pushed off the terrace following a dispute on the night of May 17.
Police have arrested four people, including Deepika’s husband Ritik, father-in-law Manoj, mother-in-law Poonam and uncle-in-law Vinod, under BNS sections 85 and 80(2) and Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, sections 3 and 4. Three others, including her sisters-in-law Neha and Tanni and a relative, Pramod, are still absconding.
“Four teams are currently raiding over 20 locations across NCR to nab them. They have switched off their phones and are not traceable, but possible hideouts are being searched,” a senior officer said.
Deepika’s father Sanjay said he had visited her in-laws’ house on May 17 following a dispute between the couple. Shortly after returning home, he received a call saying his daughter had fallen from the terrace. Her autopsy noted severe contusions on the face, thigh, forearm, chest, abdomen and arms, bone-deep wounds on the knee, and injuries near the waist.
As the cause of death could not be ascertained, viscera samples have been preserved and sent for forensic analysis to a Ghaziabad laboratory. The report is expected within six weeks.
The victim’s relatives on Thursday said they would continue their fight for justice and urged authorities to ensure a speedy trial through a fast-track court.
Police have also begun examining the criminal antecedents of Manoj, who allegedly has multiple cases, including land grabbing and assault, registered against him at Ecotech-3 police station.
