Nashik: Wearing red, pink and orange turbans, colourful outfits, 750 women brightened up the streets of the city, riding on motorcycles and scooters in the All Women's Bike Rally organised by Maharashtra Times on Sunday morning.
The bikes included Yezdis, Yamaha FZs, Bullets, Pulsars and a battery-operated bike apart from mopeds and scooters. The participants included college students, college staff, homemakers and professionals of all age groups. In all, there were 250 motorcycles, some of which were the old kick-start models.
The rally was flagged off by Mayor Ashok Murtadak, Mrs India Queen of Substance Sneha Shergill, art director Saloni Dhatrak and MLAs Seema Hiray and Devyani Pharande. First lady bike mechanic in the city, Reshma Nate and first woman wrestler of the city who bagged bronze medal at the national level were felicitated.
The rally began from Bhonsala Military Gate and proceeded towards Jehan Circle, Canada Corner, ABB Circle and back to Bhonsala Gate. The riders carried social messages on placards like stop child abuse, save girl child, save water, educate women, organ donation, tree plantation and others caught the attention of all.
Some women wore the traditional Navwari sari and rode motorcycles while others had some unique themes like a group dress code. The women danced together after the conclusion of the rally.
"Today's woman is very powerful. If she wants to she can do many things. She can pursue her dreams and create her own identity," said Sneha. "This is a good programme for women. Times can do lot of good educational programmes as well," said mayor Murtadak. Seema Hiray appreciated the organisers and said such events should be held twice a year.
