Statewide Celebration Of Marathi Children’s Theatre Day Today
Nagpur: Marathi Children's Theatre Day (Balnatya Din), which marks the beginning of a rich tradition of professional Marathi children's plays, will be celebrated across all districts of Maharashtra on Aug 2, with Nagpur joining the festivities through a series of engaging cultural performances for young artistes. This day commemorates the first-ever professional Marathi children's play, Madhumanjiri, written by Ratnakar Matkari and directed by Sudha Karmarkar, which was staged on Aug 2, 1959. The play's staging laid the foundation for Marathi Balnatya and also saw the formation of ‘Little Theatre' group by Karmarkar. To celebrate the occasion, Balrangbhoomi Parishad, an affiliate of the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Natya Parishad, is organising a range of cultural programmes across the state, especially aimed at promoting theatrical expression among children under 16.Speaking about the initiative, Sanjay Rahate, administrator of the Balrangbhoomi Parishad (Nagpur district), said, "Marathi children's theatre is not just about performance — it nurtures creativity, confidence, and communication in young minds. This annual celebration is a rightful tribute to the legacy of pioneers like Matkari and Karmarkar, and we are proud that Nagpur's young talent is enthusiastically participating once again.
