Munde cracks whip in Chandrapur over choking pollution
Chandrapur/Wardha: Maharashtra's environment and climate change minister Pankaja Munde on Thursday issued a warning to industries in Chandrapur, making it clear that violations of pollution norms will not be tolerated and human lives cannot be put at risk. During an on-ground inspection of key industrial zones, Munde announced a phased roadmap — a one-year, three-year, and long-term plans — to tackle the district's worsening pollution crisis.Touring major pollution hotspots, including the conveyor system at the Chandrapur Super Thermal Power Station in Durgapur and coal washeries in Belsani and Ghuggus, the minister directed industries to immediately install and operationalise pollution-control measures such as foggers and dust-suppression systems. Non-compliance, she warned, would invite strict regulatory action on those erring."Chandrapur is an industrial hub, and we are not against development. But industries must function within environmental norms. No one has the right to endanger citizens' health," Munde said while interacting with residents affected by pollution. The visit follows concerns raised in the state assembly by MLA Sudhir Mungantiwar, who had highlighted the scale of pollution and its impact on local communities. Reiterating her earlier assurance, Munde said she had come to Chandrapur to directly assess the situation and understand grievances of the public. She also put govt officials on notice, warning of action against those failing to enforce pollution norms.Munde also performed groundbreaking ceremony for various development works worth 25 crore at Salod (Hirapur) in Wardha on Thursday. Wardha guardian minister Pankaj Bhoyar was also present at the ceremony.Munde said rural people should build their own enterprises in villages instead of migrating to cities for jobs. "Our government does not just announce schemes but ensures that rural youth and women stand on their own feet. I will not sit quietly until they become job creators," she said.On schemes for youth, she said the government provides 50 percent subsidy for rural entrepreneurs. "Subsidies on solar units and interest concessions will also be provided to make youth financially strong," she appealed.Interacting with women, Munde praised Ladki Bahin scheme. "By providing Rs 18,000 annually, the scheme is ensuring women's dignity. Concessions in ST travel are helping women become more independent," she said.
