MSEDCL urges consumers to audit own power use as bills rise

Nagpur: Addressing concerns over rising electricity bills, the Maharashtra State Power Distribution Company (MSEDCL) has advised consumers to conduct ‘home energy audits' to understand usage patterns better and manage consumption.According to officials, such audits can help households identify the factors driving higher bills, particularly during the summer months. Increased use of appliances such as air conditioners, fans, and air coolers between April and June leads to a surge in electricity consumption, often resulting in higher bills that are mistakenly attributed to technical faults or billing errors.Consumers have been encouraged to estimate daily usage by noting the wattage of appliances and their operating hours. Online tools and mobile applications can also assist in calculating monthly consumption and expected costs.Officials emphasised the importance of understanding the slab-wise tariff system, under which rates rise with increased consumption. While usage below 100 units is charged at a lower rate, consumption beyond 300 units attracts higher tariffs, significantly raising monthly bills.Adopting energy-efficient measures can further help reduce costs. These include using higher star-rated appliances and ensuring ISI-certified wiring.
