BJYM activists damage property at NU building during protest on exam blunders

Nagpur: A group of activists from the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of BJP, along with some students, allegedly vandalised the Jamnalal Bajaj Administrative Building of Nagpur University near Ambazari Bypass on Tuesday during a protest over issues related to the Summer 2026 examinations and alleged discrepancies in the Winter 2025 results and earlier examinations. The nameplate outside vice-chancellor Manali Kshirsagar's office was smashed, while 22 flower pots placed in the corridor outside her cabin were damaged, leaving a trail of destruction shortly after she arrived at the office. Personnel from Ambazari police station detained the BJYM protesters and took them to the police station. Later, senate member Vishnu Chandge and BJP general secretaries Shrikant Aglawe and Ritesh Gavande brought the protesters back to the university campus. The VC told the the delegation that issues related to the Winter examinations have been resolved and the university is taking precautions to ensure smooth conduct of Summer examinations. BJYM city president Sachin Karare expressed regret over the incident, claiming the vandalism began after one of the nearly 20 students accompanying the delegation lost his temper. "The student was seeking correction in his results for the past two years. When the VC arrived, she allegedly refused to entertain our pleas. This angered the students and one of them became aggressive. The staff then locked the doors, which further provoked some of our workers," Karare said.Kshirsagar refuted the allegations and stated that the protesters prevented her from entering her office. "I intended to accept their memorandum, but they did not allow me to come forward. They continued sloganeering. We had to lock the cabin fearing damage to the furniture inside," she said. "The protesters themselves were not fully aware of the status of the issues they raised. It appeared politically motivated," she said.Kshirsagar further said that officials explained each issue point by point. "Several issues raised were minor and some were over a year old. Why did they not approach the administration earlier?" she asked.The Nagpur district unit of the National Students' Union of India condemned the vandalism and demanded action against BJYM activists. The organisation stated that students' grievances must be addressed in a timely manner. The VC said an FIR was being registered in connection with the incident.
