SC marriage incentives in Karnataka: Applications up, payouts thin

Mysuru: In Karnataka, the number of applications for inter-caste marriage incentives involving either a Scheduled Caste (SC) bride or groom continues to rise. However, many eligible couples have not received the financial assistance, even years after their marriage.Data furnished by social welfare minister HC Mahadevappa in reply to a question by BJP MLA Mahesh Tenginakai shows pending incentives across three financial years. In 2023-24, 4,826 couples applied for the incentive; 80 applications were rejected, and 608 eligible applicants are still awaiting payment. In 2024-25, applications rose to 5,137. While 42 were rejected, the incentive was sanctioned to only 801 couples. In 2025-26, 5,402 couples applied, 18 applications were rejected, and just 29 couples received the amount.An officer from social welfare department said Rs 3 lakh is provided for inter-caste marriages. "The applications are invited online. The incentive amount is released based on the funds available," the officer said, requesting anonymity.The minister stated that incentives are released on a seniority basis, depending on fund availability.Applicants described the delay as heartbreaking. "If the amount is released on time, it will help the newlywed couple start a new life. In villages, even today, couples opting for inter-caste marriages face a lot of resistance, including boycott. This incentive scheme was launched to support such couples to contribute to social reforms.
