Mysuru expert opens free energy efficiency demo centre for public awareness
Mysuru: Energy conservation and energy security have become key priorities worldwide. However, one of the biggest challenges facing developing countries is creating public awareness about efficient energy use. Educating consumers on the proper use of electrical equipment, energy-efficient technologies and safe power consumption practices remains critical to achieving long-term energy sustainability.
In Mysuru city an energy expert set up a free Energy Efficiency Demo Centre to raise awareness. As part of his initiative, he transformed a modest house in Saraswathipuram into a unique learning hub for energy conservation, electrical safety, and renewable energy technologies, attracting students, electrical engineers, policymakers, and consumers keen to understand the practical aspects of power management.
This free Energy Efficiency Demo Centre, established by energy expert Anil Kumar Nadiger, serves as a live demonstration facility where visitors can compare the performance and energy consumption of various lighting systems, fans and air-conditioners, understand the role of stabilisers and protection devices against voltage fluctuations, and evaluate different solar energy and backup power solutions based on consumer requirements.
Designed as a hands-on learning platform, the facility explains concepts such as light efficacy, variable-frequency drive (VFD)-based energy savings, electrical load management, and appliance efficiency. Demonstrations also highlight the actual power consumption of commonly used electrical devices and the impact of building design on energy demand. Working models show that glass façades can increase heat gain in buildings, leading to higher cooling loads and electricity consumption.
According to Nadiger, the centre was launched during Dasara 2024 with the objective of creating awareness on energy conservation and consumer education. Besides serving the public, it provides project support, testing facilities and working models for students interested in energy-related subjects.
The centre, the second such facility in Karnataka, showcases practical energy-saving technologies and tools to help citizens reduce power consumption, adopt sustainable practices, and contribute to environmental protection.
Electrical safety is another major focus area. The facility features demonstrations on safety protocols and protective devices aimed at preventing electrical accidents. “Nearly 80% of fire incidents are caused by short circuits. We are working on creating awareness on preventive measures and the safety devices that should be used,” Nadiger said.
The centre also showcases concepts related to the proposed Energy Conservation and Sustainable Building Code (ECSBC), helping visitors understand how future commercial and office buildings can be designed to improve energy performance and reduce energy consumption.
Among the innovations on display is a solar-powered induction stove developed by Praveen Kumar Mavinakadu. The system can be operated via a smartphone and is designed to meet the energy needs of urban households.
