Mysureans run to keep cancer at bay

Mysuru: In a display of community participation and public health awareness, the cancer awareness run organised by Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (MMC&RI) in association with Bharath Hospital and Institute of Oncology (BHIO) was held successfully on Sunday.Conducted under the theme ‘Running for Awareness, Racing for Cure,' the event witnessed participation from students, doctors, healthcare professionals and public. In the open category events, Purushotham secured first place in the men's category, while Divyashree won in the women's category.The marathon was inaugurated by DCF IB Prabhugouda. Addressing the gathering, he highlighted the importance of fitness and social responsibility in modern society. "Run promotes health and fitness. In today's fast-paced world, many people struggle with stress and unhealthy lifestyles. Running encourages physical strength, mental peace and self-confidence. It brings people together from different backgrounds, united by one purpose—to keep moving forward," he said.Dr Santosh Kumar KN, medical and haemato oncology, BHIO, emphasised the importance of cancer awareness, prevention and early diagnosis. "As a medical oncologist, I witness how cancer affects not only patients but entire families and communities. Prevention, early detection and timely treatment can save lives. Every step taken today represents awareness, hope and action," he noted. He further said regular physical activity during cancer treatment and survivorship significantly improves recovery, treatment tolerance and overall quality of life.
