In 2025, Mysuru sees big gains in maternal, infant mortality rates

Mysuru: The maternal and infant mortality ratio has significantly reduced in Mysuru in 2025 when compared to the previous year.The maternal mortality ratio (MMR) dropped to 32.5 per lakh live births from 69.5, while the infant mortality ratio (IMR) dipped to 11.1 per 1,000 live births. In 2025, Mysuru had earned national recognition for the decline in the maternal and infant mortality rate. The district reported nine maternal deaths from Jan 2025 to Dec 2025, highlighting the improvement in delivery of healthcare and monitoring in the district. Meanwhile, 311 infant deaths were reported in 2025. Officials attributed the reduction to the successful implementation of Pradhana Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan, which aims to provide quality antenatal care free of cost in all state-run hospitals. District health authorities said this helped save the lives of 13,910 high-risk pregnant women in Mysuru district last year. They added that the expansion of door-to-door healthcare services under various schemes of the govt in both urban and rural areas also played a crucial role in reducing the maternal and infant mortality rate in the district. Measures included universal immunisation drives, proper registration of pregnancies, effective monitoring of sex determination cases, prevention of child marriage, and a focus on institutional deliveries in the district. District health officer Dr PC Kumaraswamy said that district health authorities have initiated various measures to ensure zero infant and maternal mortality by taking special care of all pregnant women and deliveries under different schemes of the state and Centre this year.
