Two teens killed in hit-and-run on Western Express Highway

Mumbai: An 18-year-old college-goer was injured, and his 17-year-old friend died in a hit-and-run at Dahisar East recently. While Dahisar Police have registered an FIR, they are yet to trace the motorist responsible for the crash.Karan Rajput, the complainant, and his deceased friend, Aditya Velankar, were on the former's motorcycle on the Western Express Highway at Dahisar when the incident occurred on Sept 13.In his statement to the police, Rajput said that he was a first-year BSc student and lived with his parents in Kandivli. Two months ago, his family purchased a motorcycle and registered it in his mother's name. Rajput and his father, who is a food deliveryman, used the motorcycle.Around 2.20pm on Sept 13, Rajput called up Velankar and another friend, Piyush Shukla. He asked them to accompany him to Dahisar to purchase some accessories for his motorcycle. Rajput was riding the two-wheeler while Velankar was seated pillion. Shukla was on another two-wheeler.The trio reached a garage at Dahisar's Ovaripada and inquired about the accessories. But their cost was high and the trio turned back to head to Kandivli without the accessories. Around 4pm, the two motorcycles were moving below the flyover near Shailendra school. Shukla's motorcycle was ahead while Rajput was a little behind.A speeding white-coloured car overtook Rajput's motorcycle from the right and brushed it. As a result, Rajput lost control of the two-wheeler. Due to the impact, Velankar was thrown off the bike and landed on the right side. Rajput suffered injuries on his face, hands, and legs. But Velankar lost consciousness after having suffered severe head injuries and bleeding from his nose and ear.Shukla quickly realised that his friends were nowhere to be seen and came back to look for them. He helped Rajput and Velankar into an autorickshaw. They went to a private hospital where Velankar was pronounced dead by the doctors.Rajput said the motorist in the white-coloured car did not halt or help them to go to a hospital. Police said the location was not covered by cameras, and they are yet to identify the accused.
