TISS plans a school for data science and AI on Mumbai campus
Mumbai: The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) is set to widen its academic canvas, with plans to establish a dedicated school for data science and artificial intelligence—firmly rooted in the context of social sciences. The proposed school will be the 13th on its Mumbai campus. Alongside, the institute is preparing to expand its undergraduate offerings, with new programmes slated to roll out from the coming academic year. The announcements were made by vice chancellor Badri Narayan Tiwari on the sidelines of the institute's 85th convocation on Saturday. A total of 1,080 students graduated, including 97 research scholars who were awarded Doctor of Philosophy degrees. One received a Master of Philosophy degree, while 982 students were conferred Master's, BEd, MEd, and dual degrees— adding to a cohort increasingly stepping into domains where technology, policy, and society intersect. Scholarships worth about Rs 3 crore were disbursed. Addressing the graduating batch, Thaawarchand Gehlot said the vision of Viksit Bharat can only be realised through inclusive progress. Tiwari indicated the institute is working towards setting up a Viksit Bharat Vichar Kendra, which will consolidate inputs from seminars across TISS schools over a two-month period. "A detailed compendium will be prepared and shared with the government," he said.tnn
