MUMBAI: Bangur Nagar police lodged an FIR against an unknown customer for allegedly fiddling with the barcodes on sugar sacks and cheating the Malad outlet of a popular chain of department stores of Rs 37,000 over seven months.
According to the store manager's police statement, he conned the store of 860kg of sugar.
The store sells sugar sacks weighing 50kg each. As per its policy, each sack, weighing 50kg, has two barcodes of 30kg and 20kg pasted.
Between July 2025 and Jan, the customer bought 43 sacks of sugar. He allegedly removed the 20kg barcodes on each, thereby paying for only 30kg each time.
The man allegedly forced the store's staff into giving him 20kg extra each time, claiming his sack only had 30kg sugar.
