Ahead of the high-stakes Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections, scheduled for next month, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Anand Dubey on Sunday exuded confidence, saying that "the real Shiv Sena" has consistently won the Mumbai Municipal Corporation elections and maintained its hold on the city for the past 30 years. He also took a dig at Congress, dismissing its relevance in Mumbai politics. In a self-made video, UBT leader Anand Dubey said, "There's no need to take the Congress party seriously in Mumbai. For the past 30 years, Congress has consistently lost the Mumbai Municipal Corporation elections, so what miracle will they perform in 2026? The Congress party in Mumbai is like a tourist. Come, roam around, put up hoardings, campaign, lose the election, and then go home." This came after the Congress party announced it would contest the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections alone. Congress leader Sachin Sawant said, "We have already clarified our position, and the Congress party wants to move forward on its own in the elections, and there is an ideological basis behind this. This was not a hasty decision; it was the unanimous opinion of the entire party. We are going to fight against any party that creates conflict in the name of religion, caste, region, or language. We want the election to be fought on the issue of development, not conflict."

Hectic, last minute parleys between Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) were underway on Monday to firm up an alliance between the two parties for next month's crucial Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation polls. While leaders of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) and Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena have been insisting that talks between the two sides have ended, no official announcement on an alliance has been made so far. On Monday, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut met MNS president Raj Thackeray. MNS leader Bala Nandgaonkar also paid a visit to Matoshri, the residence of Uddhav Thackeray, to hold talks. Both the leaders are trusted aides of their respective party chiefs.

The results of local body polls have clearly shown that the BJP is the largest party in Maharashtra, with the people of the state putting complete trust in the development vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minster Devendra Fadnavis said on Monday.
In results declared on Sunday, the Mahayuti alliance of the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP swept the elections to 288 municipal councils and nagar panchayats, winning 207 posts of presidents in the local bodies. The Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi could come up with a collective tally of 44. According to the SEC, the BJP won 117 posts of municipal presidents, Shiv Sena won 53, and the NCP won 37 posts. The Congress bagged 28, the NCP (SP) seven, and Shiv Sena (UBT) nine. Addressing a press conference in Ramgiri where he congratulated newly-elected members and presidents of municipal councils, the CM said the Bharatiya Janata Party has razed the Opposition's fortress in Nagpur district. "Sunday's results have clearly shown that the BJP is the biggest party in Maharashtra. More than 3000 BJP councillors got elected. The people of the state have shown trust in PM Modi's development vision," Fadnavis said. "In Nagpur district, the BJP has made several councils Congress-free. The state government will bring huge developmental changes in the district," he said while urging party workers to not get arrogant due to the emphatic win. The huge mandate for the Mahayuti must motivate every functionary to work more for the people of Maharashtra, he emphasised.

The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) is not ready to accept the local body polls verdict despite voters having taught the party a lesson, Maharashtra minister and Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Shirsat said on Monday. After suffering a crushing defeat in the 2024 Assembly elections, the civic polls were seen as a make-or-break test for the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). However, the lack of coordination among opposition parties and the absence of an intensive campaign have indicated a possible further weakening of the alliance in the long run. At the same time, they underline a crucial lesson for the ruling dispensation: despite the BJP’s expanding footprint, the cohesion of the Mahayuti alliance remains essential for sustaining long-term electoral dominance. The outcome suggests that Mahayuti has successfully operationalised the “double-engine government” narrative even at the municipal level. For the MVA, the verdict serves as a stark warning. Unless it resolves internal leadership tussles and matches the BJP’s organisational depth, the upcoming Zilla Parishad and major municipal corporation elections -- including the high-stakes Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls -- could see a repeat of this rout.

The ‘family pack’ strategy of the Bharatiya Janata Party for the Loha municipal council polls in Nanded came undone as its candidate for the post of president, Gajanan Suryavanshi, and his five relatives lost. The post of president of Loha municipal council was won by Ajit Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party, whose candidate, incidentally, is named Sharad Pawar. Counting of votes for elections to the posts of president and members in 286 municipal councils and nagar panchayats held in two phases began at 10 am on Sunday.

The Saamana editorial sharply criticised the State Election Commission (SEC) for its perceived "inaction", describing the body as being in a state of "slumber" while instances of kidnapping, terror, and open money distribution took place across the state. The editorial claimed that the BJP has started a sole business of winning every election through dishonesty. "After the British, the BJP and its allies have looted the country the most. Elections are fought and won using that very looted money. Furthermore, a significant amount of 'drug money' was also used in the election. This raises questions about what our democracy is doing and how the 'Voter King' actually votes." According to the latest figures from the State Election Commission (SEC), the BJP has emerged as the single largest party, winning over 100 municipal president posts. The Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s NCP have each secured more than 40 seats. In contrast, the combined opposition, including the Congress, Sharad Pawar’s NCP(SP), and Shiv Sena(UBT), managed to secure roughly 60 seats. This result mirrors the "pattern" seen in the recent Assembly elections, where the Mahayuti secured a similar landslide victory, said the editorial.

At least 16 people, including two newly elected members from Jejuri Municipal Council, suffered minor burns after a fire broke out at the foothills of the Jejuri Gadh Tirthkshetra."All of them sustained minor burns. They were discharged from the hospital after preliminary treatment," Rajendrasingh Gaud, deputy superintendent of police of Bhor division, Pune Rural Police told TOI. The incident occurred around 3pm on Sunday when the workers of a political party and two newly elected members of the Jejuri Municipal Council went to the Jejuri Gadh to offer prayers after their victory.Bhandara (turmeric) was used during rituals at the Jejuri Gadh. "On Sunday afternoon, the workers used the Bhandara and set off firecrackers. This led to a minor explosion and a fire at the foothills," an officer from the Pune Rural Police said.

As the ruling Mahayuti alliance of the BJP, Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) registered a resounding victory in the elections to 288 municipal councils and nagar panchayats in Maharashtra, Janata Dal (United) on Monday termed the outcome a “remarkable performance”. JD(U) national spokesperson Rajeev Ranjan Prasad said the results clearly reflected the growing public confidence in the Mahayuti alliance. “This is a remarkable performance by the Mahayuti alliance. In the Assembly elections as well, under the leadership of Devendra Fadnavis, the Mahayuti had demonstrated a strong presence. This winning momentum is likely to continue in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections too,” he said. Reacting to the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction) questioning the results of the Maharashtra local body polls, Prasad said such reactions were not unexpected after an electoral defeat. “There should be no surprise when such statements are made following a loss. However, if they fail to introspect on the reasons why the grassroots support of Shiv Sena, which was built on Balasaheb Thackeray’s legacy and the work done during his tenure, has weakened over time after his demise due to Uddhav Thackeray’s leadership, then it is a missed opportunity to understand the reality,” he added.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Anil Parab has said that the announcement on the alliance between his party and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena could be made “any moment”. According to his party colleague Sanjay Raut, it can happen in two to three days. Speaking to reporters, Parab said the people of Mumbai have always backed the Thackerays and expressed confidence that the tie-up will happen in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation polls. “Alliance could be announced anytime. Leaders of both parties -- Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and MNS president Raj Thackeray -- will decide how the announcement of the alliance should be made,” Parab said.

Elections on 286 Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats were held in two phases, as some councils went to polls on December 2, while the remaining cast their votes on December 20. Multiple key local bodies, including Baramati, Ambernath, went to polls. Two councils saw candidates being elected unopposed too, in Angar in Solapur and Dondaicha in Dhule. Around 129 municipal council chairpersons have been elected from the BJP. Together, all three alliance parties (Shiv Sena, BJP, and NCP (Ajit Pawar) account for 75% of the city council chairpersons. In terms of corporators, over 3300 candidates of the BJP have been elected, according to Chief Minister Fadnavis.

After the ruling Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra registered a decisive victory in the local body elections, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale termed it a "great success," saying that the coalition has secured a good result in the entire municipal polls. "The Mahayuti has achieved a great success and it has secured a very good result in the entire municipal election... The mayor of Mumbai and Pune will be from the Mahayuti, and the Mahayuti will achieve 90% success everywhere... We should get 14-15 seats; that is what we are striving for," Athawale told reporters. In response to the results, Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC said that the results clearly demonstrated public endorsement of the leadership of Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Speaking to ANI, the Shiv Sena leader said, "In the 2017 local body elections, the Shiv Sena had only 27 mayors. In 2025, we won at more than 60 locations and are hopeful of winning at nearly 70. This is due to the leadership of Dy CM Eknath Shinde, who has campaigned tirelessly on the ground.

The Mahayuti alliance comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena, and the NCP has swept the elections to 288 municipal councils and nagar panchayats, winning 207 posts of local body presidents on Sunday and limiting the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi to a combined tally of 44.

The final figures were released late at night by the State Election Commission (SEC).

According to the SEC, the BJP secured 117 municipal president posts, followed by Shiv Sena with 53 and the NCP with 37. Among the Opposition, the Congress won 28 posts, the NCP (SP) seven, and Shiv Sena (UBT) nine.

Registered parties accounted for four seats, while 28 municipal president posts were won by unrecognised registered parties. Independents secured five seats, the poll body said.

The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) registered a clean sweep in the Pune district local body elections, winning all 17 President posts across municipal councils and nagar panchayats, and dealing a major blow to the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA).

According to official results, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) emerged as the largest NDA constituent in terms of President posts, securing 10 positions, followed by the Shiv Sena with four President posts, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won three.

"Everyone must work unitedly. The Mahayuti flag must be hoisted on the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation," he said during a party event in which several workers and leaders of the Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Nationalist Congress Party (SP) joined the Shiv Sena.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah congratulated the leaders of the Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra for sweeping the state's local body polls,

Shah also thanked CM Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy CMs Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, and all the workers of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

"Thanks to the people of the state for giving overwhelming support to the Mahayuti in the Maharashtra Nagar Panchayat and Nagar Parishad elections. This victory is the people's blessings on the vision of the welfare of every section under the central and state governments of the NDA led by Modi ji. On this victory, I extend my best wishes to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde, and Ajit Pawar, and all the workers of the NDA," Shah wrote on X.

Even as the State Election Commission is yet to make an official announcement on the Maharashtra local body elections 2025, the ruling Mahayuti alliance on Sunday claimed a decisive lead, asserting that early trends point to a sweeping mandate in its favour across municipal councils and local bodies.

Ahead of the declaration of results, Maharashtra Minister and BJP state president Chandrashekhar Bawankule, speaking to the media in Jalna, said the Mahayuti, comprising the BJP, NCP, and Shiv Sena, was poised to win with a two-thirds majority and around a 51 per cent vote share.

"The people of Maharashtra are with the Mahayuti. They believe that only the Mahayuti government can bring development to the municipal, metropolitan, and district council areas," Bawankule said, adding that the vision of a developed Maharashtra belonged to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the alliance government.

A recounting of votes was ordered in the Kamptee municipal council polls in Nagpur district after the Congress objected to the 116-vote victory of BJP candidate Ajay Agrawal, an official said.

Counting of votes for the elections to the posts of president and members in 286 municipal councils and nagar panchayats across Maharashtra began at 10 am on Sunday, with initial trends showing the ruling Mahayuti alliance—comprising the BJP, Ajit Pawar-led NCP and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena—comfortably ahead.

The recount was ordered after Congress candidate Shakur Nagani, who was defeated by Agrawal, formally raised an objection following the declaration of results, the official said.

Security has been tightened at the counting centre, with Quick Response Teams (QRT) and Riot Control Police (RCP) deployed as supporters of both the BJP and the Congress gathered at the venue, leading to a tense situation, the official added.

"Results show the public's preference for development over politics. The grand victory of the Mahayuti in the elections is just a trailer. The Mahayuti will repeat the same in the forthcoming municipal corporation elections," he had said.

"First of all, I thank the people of Maharashtra. The people of the state have given massive support to the BJP and the Mahayuti. I had already predicted that out of all the municipal council chairpersons elected, 75% would be from the Mahayuti, and the people have delivered exactly that verdict. It has also become clear that the Bharatiya Janata Party is the number one party. So far, around 129 municipal council chairpersons have been elected from the BJP. Together, all three alliance parties account for 75% of the city council chairpersons. In terms of corporators, the BJP has created a record: 3300 corporators have been elected. This shows the massive public support we have received. I congratulate our allies Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, whose parties have also performed very well. Our performance has matched that of the Assembly elections. I also congratulate Ravindra Chavan, under whose leadership these elections were successfully conducted. Former president Bawankule, cabinet colleagues, and party workers — all have worked extremely hard. The coordination between the organisation and the party was excellent, and that is why we achieved this victory. This result is even better than 2017, and such a victory has not been seen in Maharashtra in the last 30–35 years," he said

State Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal congratulated the party candidates who won the posts of municipal president and councillors.

In a terse comment, he "congratulated" the state poll body for "helping" the ruling Mahayuti alliance in the elections.

Senior Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve attributed Mahayuti's win to "money and muscle power.

"The Mahayuti has bagged a larger number of seats as compared to constituents of the Maha Vikas Aghadi, thanks to the muscle and money power deployed by the ruling parties," Danve told PTI in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.

People have demolished the plot of the Opposition to defame Parli and Beed through the results of the local body polls, former Maharashtra minister and NCP leader Dhananjay Munde claimed amid counting of votes.

"This was a fight against the people who tried to defame Parli," he said in a reference to the area being targeted for "lawlessness" in the backdrop of the murder of sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh in December last year and the subsequent friction between the Vanjari and Maratha communities.

Talking to reporters, Munde, MLA from Parli, said, "We have managed a big victory. Almost all candidates of our alliance have won. There are 2-3 independents, and they are also of Mahayuti. The Opposition should think about what their position is now. The plot of the Opposition to defame this town has been demolished by Parli voters." People have also given a strong response in Ambajogai, Gevrai, Beed as the Mahayuti has won the local body polls in these places, he claimed.

Speaking to reporters at Nagpur airport, Maharashtra minister and BJP leader Chandrashekhar Bawankule said, "The Mahayuti has with full strength taken a very good lead in Maharashtra and the people have rejected the Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP (SP). Today is a day of celebration. I had earlier said only governments led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis can develop Maharashtra." The BJP is leading on 22 seats out of 27 seats in Nagpur district, he further claimed.

"People have chosen Mahayuti in the elections. The Mahayuti will win two third seats. BJP will bag more than 135 seats. People are with development, Devendra Fadnavis and Mahayuti as they want Viksit Maharashtra. The BJP has never before got such huge success in nagar palika elections. I want to congratulate the voters, BJP workers, CM Fadnavis and state BJP president Ravindra Chavan," he added.

Union minister Nitin Gadkari described BJP’s “overwhelming success” in the Maharashtra local body elections as a “victory of the (party) workers.”

“Yours, ours, BJP belongs to everyone and this is a victory of the workers,” Gadkari said in a post on X.

The senior BJP leader further congratulated state party chief Ravindra Chavan, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and party workers for what he termed the Bharatiya Janata Party’s overwhelming performance in the municipal council and nagar panchayat polls.

“This is a victory of the workers. Thank you to the people who supported the BJP by maintaining faith in its development oriented working style,” he said.

The results of the Maharashtra local body polls are a trailer of what is in store in the municipal corporation elections on January 15, deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde claimed amid counting of votes on Sunday.

Initial trends showed the Mahayuti, comprising the BJP, Ajit Pawar's NCP and Shinde's Shiv Sena, ahead comfortably.

"Results show the public's preference for development over politics. The grand victory of the Mahayuti in the elections is an indication that the Mahayuti will repeat the same in the forthcoming municipal corporation elections," he said at a press conference.

Asserting that the Mahayuti had crossed the 200-mark in polls to 286 local bodies, Shinde claimed the "BJP had scored a century" and the Shiv Sena has notched a "half century" and emerged as the second-largest party in the state.

"Konkan is the bastion of the Shiv Sena. It is not confined to Mumbai and Thane but has reached each and every household in the state. Even in areas where the party faced losses, the collective victory of the Mahayuti remained the priority," he said.

"People have decided which is the real Shiv Sena. Our ideology is Balasaheb Thackeray. He would be happy today over this magnificent victory. This is a very big lesson for those who indulge in politics. The people reject those who reject them," he said.

Shinde brushed aside queries on Uddhav Thackeray allying with MNS leader and cousin Raj Thackeray saying it would have no impact since people have decided to vote for those who work.

Shinde also thanked "Ladki bahins" (women beneficiaries a state government scheme) and party workers for the victory.

Durgadevi Indrajit Jagdale of Ajit Pawar-led NCP won the mayoral election in the Daund Municipal Council, defeating Monali Veer by a margin of 4,891 votes.

Reacting to her victory, Jagdale said, “This victory belongs to the people who voted for me and allowed me to serve them. I will try my best to live upto the expectations of the people and deliver the promises.”

Taking a sharp dig at rivals, Maharashtra deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde said on Sunday that “those sitting at home have met the same fate,” adding that the total number of seats won by the opposition, or the MVA, was even less than the tally secured by Shiv Sena alone in the nagar panchayat and municipal council elections. Shinde was speaking to the media in Thane.

He said the Mahayuti alliance would repeat its performance in upcoming municipal polls. He reiterated that development remains Mahayuti’s core agenda and said the people have once again shown which Shiv Sena is the “real” one.

Amid counting of votes in the Maharashtra local body polls on Sunday, the Congress and the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) claimed they had retained their party bastions in Chandrapur and Sangli districts.

Initial trends have shown an edge for the Mahayuti comprising the BJP, Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar-led NCP.

The Congress has won the municipal council president's post as well as 21 of the 23 seats in Brahmapuri municipal council in Chandrapur district, senior party leader Vijay Wadettiwar said. The BJP and NCP have got one seat each.

In Urun-Ishwarpur municipal council in Sangli district, the NCP (SP) has won 23 seats as well as the post of council president, senior leader Jayant Patil claimed.

Senior Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar told PTI that the party has secured the municipal council president’s post and 21 out of 23 seats in the Brahmapuri Municipal Council in Chandrapur district.

"Under Devendra Fadnavis’s leadership, the Mahayuti has done excellent work across Maharashtra. Whether in development, farmers’ issues, women’s welfare, or other sectors, Maharashtra progressed under his leadership and people rewarded him with their votes as a mark of victory"
