Maharashtra bandh: Six held, four detained; stones pelted at 3 BEST buses

MUMBAI: Six people were arrested and four more detained in the city during the Maharashtra bandh called by VBA president Prakash Ambedkar on Friday. . A BEST bus driver, Vilas Dabhade (53), was injured in Chembur and the vehicle’s windscreen damaged. “He was treated at Shatabdi Hospital for abrasions on left forearm, left thumb and right hand caused by glass shards and sent home,” a doctor said.


State officials said the bandh didn’t have impact daily life, but Ambedkar claimed it was successful. He said over 3,000 activists across the state were detained though they were not involved in any violence. He claimed there was no rush in local trains or and attendance poor in offices.

Pant Nagar police registered four offences, and one offence was filed at Chembur under the Bombay Police Act of 37 (3), along with Section 135 for organising morchas despite prohibitory orders. There were sporadic protests in areas like Andheri, Kurla, Ghatkopar and Mulund. Sources said autos and taxis were off roads in some areas in the morning, but the situation normalised by evening. Vendors and shops in areas between Ghatkopar/Chembur and Mulund resumed business late afternoon.
