Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday thanked the people of Mumbai for "blessing" the NDA in the municipal corporation elections.
"I am extremely grateful to my sisters and brothers of Mumbai for blessing the NDA," Modi said in a post on X, as the BJP-Shiv Sena combine surged towards a majority in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.
"Mumbai is the pride of our nation. It is the city of aspiration. It is a city that drives our growth," the prime minister added.
Modi said Mumbai personifies the best of Maharashtra's vibrant culture.
"Inspired by this great ethos, we will deliver good governance and 'Ease of Living' to the people of the city," he said.
Shiv Sena (UBT)-MNS combine had pitched the BMC polls as an attempt to save the Marathi manoos and Mumbai. It was also seen as an acid test for the Thackeray brand as Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and MNS chief Raj Thackeray came together after 20 years. However, while a number of Marathis seemed to have backed the Thackerays, the brand failed to shine enough to propel them to retain BMC.

Counting in Ward 7 took longer than usual after an EVM malfunction delayed the process. The machine showed a total of 650 votes cast but failed to display the candidate-wise breakup. Following consultations with the two leading candidates, Khankar and Ghosalkar, the returning officer declared the result. Khankar secured 10,148 votes, while Ghosalkar polled 9,351.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections “could end in a draw” as the final results for India’s richest municipal body remain pending.
Speaking to reporters, Raut described the trends as “inaccurate” and said the polls are tightly contested. He added, “The time to react has not yet come. Given how the vote counting is progressing in Mumbai, the final results won't be available until midnight. The figures being released are inaccurate. Vote counting hasn't even started in approximately 100 wards yet. Although I will admit that it's a close contest. The competition is fierce. But it's not true that the Shiv Sena (UBT) is far behind, as some are claiming.”
“The figures you are seeing now will change. Our 60 corporators joined the Shinde faction. Almost all of them lost... Perhaps this match could end in a draw," he added.
So far, results for 204 of the 227 seats have been declared. The BJP-Shiv Sena alliance has secured 110 seats, approaching the majority mark of 114. The BJP emerged as the largest party with 85 seats, while its alliance partner, Shiv Sena, led on 25 seats. Meanwhile, the Thackeray brothers’ faction trailed with 65 seats, with Shiv Sena (UBT) winning 60 of those.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah lauded the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance for its performance in the Maharashtra civic polls.
Taking to X, Shah credited the success to the state government’s development and welfare initiatives. He wrote, "The resounding victory of the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance in the Maharashtra municipal elections demonstrates that the people across the country have unwavering faith only in the development policies of the NDA government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This historic success is a clear endorsement by the people of the development and welfare work undertaken by the Mahayuti government in the state. Heartfelt gratitude to the people of Maharashtra for this overwhelming support."
"Heartiest congratulations to Chief Minister Devevendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, BJP State President Ravindra Chavan, and all the BJP-Shiv Sena workers on this victory," he added.
Mumbai BJP chief Ameet Satam said that the ruling Mahayuti alliance will elect the mayor of the metropolis after internal discussions. "The Mahayuti will elect its mayor. We will discuss and then finalise," Satam told reporters.
His remarks came as trends and results indicated that the BJP–Shiv Sena alliance was on course to win the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.
Satam also said voters had rejected efforts by certain sections to change the city’s character, calling the Mahayuti’s performance a victory for Hindutva.
Gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli suffered a major political setback as both his daughters were defeated in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections in south Mumbai.
Gawli’s daughter Geeta, who was contesting for a fourth consecutive term from ward 212 in the Byculla–Agipada area, lost to Samajwadi Party candidate Amrin Shezad Abrahani. His other daughter, Yogita, who made her electoral debut from ward 207 in the Byculla–Chinchpokli area of central Mumbai, was defeated by BJP candidate Rohidas Lokhande.
Gawli’s sister-in-law Vandana Pradeep Gawli, who contested on a Shiv Sena ticket from ward 198, also lost to Aboli Gopal Khadye of the rival Shiv Sena (UBT).
After PC Mohan took a jibe at Raj Thackeray, who had used the term to mock BJP leader Annamalai during his election campaign, Mumbai BJP chief spokesperson Niranjan Shetty and party workers also marked the BJP’s victory by distributing rasmalai.

Ending the nearly 30-year dominance of the undivided Shiv Sena, the BJP emerged as the single largest party in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections and also registered a sweeping victory in Pune, crushing the combined challenge of the two NCP factions.
The BJP-led alliance is set to secure around 125 of the 227 seats in the BMC, India’s richest civic body, which has a budget of Rs 74,427 crore for 2025–26.
With deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena also posting a strong performance, the BJP-led alliance is firmly placed to take control of the cash-rich civic body.
The high-profile contest for the BMC saw the Thackeray cousins reunite after two decades, but their bid fell short as early results dashed their expectations.
In Pune and the neighbouring Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal corporations, the BJP is heading for a decisive victory, well ahead of the NCP and NCP (SP) alliance.
Maharashtra assembly speaker Rahul Narwekar expressed gratitude to the people of Mumbai for supporting the BJP-led alliance in the civic body elections, saying the mandate reflects voters’ desire for the city’s development.
“First of all, I want to thank the people of Mumbai for reposing faith in the BJP alliance. This mandate has been given for the development of Mumbai. We have earned the trust of Mumbai’s residents through key projects like the Metro Rail Network, Coastal Road, and Trans Harbour Link, and this result reflects their desire for the city’s progress,” Narwekar said.

In the NMMC elections, BJP candidate Nilesh Bhojane of Ward 17A lost to Shiv Sena (ES) candidate Kishor Patkar.
Bhojane’s nomination had initially been rejected by the Returning Officer on the last day of filing, following a complaint by Patkar alleging unauthorized construction. However, Bhojane approached the High Court, which overturned the RO’s decision and declared his candidature valid.
In Ward 59, Shiv Sena (UBT) veteran Yeshodhar Shailesh Phanse defeated BJP’s Yogiraj Dabhadkar.
Dabhadkar, a former corporator from Lokhandwala Ward 60, had been shifted to Versova Ward 59 after Ward 60 was reserved for women.
He is the nephew of ex-BJP MLA Bharati Lavekar, whose own niece also lost her MLA seat to Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Haroon Khan in the recent assembly elections.
