Mothers as first responders: The ‘Maa Arogya Mitra’ model set to transform Meerut’s health landscape

MEERUT: In an era where non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like hypertension, diabetes, and obesity pose a greater threat to public health than traditional infections, a silent revolution is brewing in the kitchens of Meerut.

The "Maa Arogya Mitra" model, a community-driven preventive health initiative, is proving that the most effective shield against lifestyle diseases is not a hospital bed, but an empowered mother. Guided by the philosophy that every kitchen is a pharmacy and every mother a doctor, the program aims to shift the focus from expensive clinical treatments to grassroots prevention.

Under the leadership of Nodal Officer Dr Ankur Tyagi and the guidance of CDO Nupur Goel and CMO Dr Ashok Kataria, the initiative utilises

"Mata Baithaks" (mothers' meetings) to educate women on dietary changes and early screening. The framework leverages culturally rooted wisdom, promoting natural preventatives like fenugreek for blood sugar management and tulsi for immunity. By transforming motivated volunteers into "Arogya Mitras," the model creates a vital bridge between individual households and the Ayushman Arogya Mandir.

The results at the Police Line Health Centre are a testament to the model's success. With 13 ASHA workers training approximately 255 volunteers, Meerut has achieved the highest district-level screening coverage for blood pressure and diabetes. This structured approach has not only improved health outcomes but also bolstered the "Asha Pay" program. By enhancing capacity and monitoring, monthly ASHA incentives have surged from Rs 3,500 to Rs 9,800, proving that valuing service leads to systemic strength.

Looking ahead, the initiative plans to integrate these health pioneers with Self-Help Groups and the PM Vishwakarma Yojana to ensure financial sustainability. By equipping ASHA workers with essential tools like glucometers and focusing on vegetarian nutrition, Meerut is setting a national precedent. The message is clear: a healthy nation begins with a healthy home, steered by a mother who is as much a healer as she is a homemaker.
