Meerut: A 25-year-old man was arrested for allegedly attempting to run over Brajghat toll plaza workers on National Highway 9 in Hapur following a payment dispute, police said on Friday. A video of the incident was widely circulated on social media.
Police said that a vehicle headed towards Delhi on Thursday evening was stopped at the booth after the FASTag registered insufficient balance. As a long queue began to build up behind the car, the staff asked the driver to move aside and make the payment in cash.
The situation escalated when the driver allegedly lost his temper and accelerated the vehicle towards the toll workers in an apparent attempt to mow them down. The workers managed to escape unhurt and alerted the cops who then reached the spot and arrested the accused.
Garh SHO Devendra Bisht said, "Govind Kumar is a fruit trader and a native of Chandigarh. He, along with his father, was returning from a relative's place in Amroha. We have charged him under BNS section 189 for resisting the law and seized his vehicle. Probe is on."
