MANGALORE: For Vijayalaxmi Shetty, a resident of Kalmadka Village of Sullia taluk, former CM H D Kumaraswamy is the Almighty on earth.
Thanks to HDK's financial help and moral support, Vijayalaxmi (32) who lost control over her upper and lower limbs after a fall she sustained five months ago, is back on her feet.
Vijayalaxmi was the only bread winner of the family after she lost her husband, Manjunath, four years ago. Adding to her woes is the health problems of her children Vijetha (9) and Hitan (8), who have epilepsy. Hitan has problematic vision too.
HDK not only took care of her medical treatment, a spinal surgery, but also was generous enough to deposit Rs 3 lakh at Corporation Bank, Kadri branch, for 120 months in her children's name (Rs 1.5 lakh each). The deposit at 8.20 per cent interest will give Vijayalaxmi Rs 2,036 per month.
Dr Ranjit Shetty, surgeon at AJ Hospital said the patient, who had sustained spinal injury in the cervical region, has gained 70% control over her bodily functions. "Now she can walk using a walker and does her basic routine functions with ease. She does not require to be in hospital. Though she cannot be completely like her earlier self, she should be 90% normal in another three to six months," he told TOI. Vijayalaxmi also received Rs 1 lakh from the CM's Relief Fund for her treatment.
"Now barring free movement of fingers on both hands and the left leg, I'm almost normal. I will not be able to do my previous work (roll beedis), but I hope things will improve," she said.
Kumaraswamy's benevolence rubbed off on AJ Hospital authorities too and they waived the cost of medicines which was Rs 36,000 (Totally Rs 76,000, but HDK had paid Rs 40,000 earlier).
