Two houses burgled in Madurai; gold, cash stolen

Madurai: Burglars broke into two houses in Sikkandarchavadi near Alanganallur and escaped with gold, cash and silver articles, police said on Thursday.

In the first case, S Rino, 30, had locked her house on May 25 and travelled to Kodaikanal. Her husband is employed in the United States. When she returned on May 27, she found the front door and bureau broken open. Police said 81 sovereigns of gold and cash were missing from the house.

The burglars also targeted a nearby house belonging to Arjunan, 35. They allegedly stole Rs3,500 in cash and silver articles after gaining entry into the premises.

Police have registered cases and launched an investigation. A dog squad and fingerprint experts inspected the crime scene and collected evidence. Efforts are under way to identify and trace those involved in the burglaries.
