Siddha quack nabbed after ‘patient’ dies

Madurai: Madurai city police on Friday arrested a quack who was running a private varma treatment centre after a man who recently underwent treatment there died of cardiac arrest.
Police said Rajapandi, 36, a resident of Villapuram housing board and married to Kanmani, 30, was working as an Armed Reserve (AR) constable. The couple has two sons. Last month, Rajapandi sought treatment at the varma treatment centre in Villapuram for joint pain. He was being treated by Sivasubramani, who claimed to be a siddha doctor.
However, during treatment, his condition worsened and on March 27, he suffered cardiac arrest. Though he was immediately rushed to a private hospital, Rajapandi died without responding to treatment.
Based on his wife’s complaint, Avaniyapuram police registered a case and were investigating. Meanwhile, a team led by the joint director of health services, Madurai, comprising government siddha doctors, along with police carried out investigations at the varma treatment centre. They found that Sivasubramani did not have any qualification for practising siddha medicine, and was using a fake certificate to run his clinic. Subsequently, police arrested Sivasubramani.
