Madurai: The Madurai city traffic police, along with Tamil Nadu Police Traffic Wardens, will carry out road safety awareness programmes for school students and the general public during the Republic Day celebrations on Monday at the Armed Reserve Ground.
For the first time as part of the celebrations, the traffic police and wardens will jointly organise a helmet bike rally and stage a mime performance focusing on road safety. The initiatives are aimed at reaching thousands of students and members of the public attending the event.

A senior traffic police official said around 80 personnel would take part. While the helmet rally will involve both traffic police and traffic wardens, the mime act will be performed by the wardens alone. During the rally, both riders and pillion riders will wear helmets, with the pillion rider carrying the Tricolour.
Madurai city chief traffic warden T Thavamani said the initiative was taken on the direction of police commissioner Dr J Loganathan to ensure wider public outreach on a significant occasion. The mime act will stress the importance of wearing helmets while riding two-wheelers and avoiding mobile phone use while on the road.
Thavamani said he would portray Yamaraj in the performance, accompanied by Chitraguptan and others, using humour to convey the message. The act, he added, also aims to reinforce that the police are partners in public safety, not adversaries.
