Brain dead man gives new lease of life to 5
Madurai: The family of a 25-year-old youth, declared brain dead following a road accident, donated his organs on Wednesday, providing a new lease of life to five people. Devanathan, a resident of Madurai, met with a severe road accident on May 11 and was admitted to Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital where he failed to regain consciousness and was declared brain dead.After counselling by the transplant team, his family consented to the donation. In the early hours of Wednesday, a successful retrieval procedure was conducted. One kidney and the liver were transplanted at Meenakshi hospital, while the second kidney was sent to Kauvery Medical Centre in Thennur. His corneas were donated to Aravind Eye Hospital. Although heart and lung donation was approved, no compatible recipients were available. District collector K J Praveen Kumar paid tribute to the donor, as the state govt honoured the family with an official salute under the organ donor protocol.
