JALANDHAR:
Manjinder Singh Sirsa
was elected president of the Delhi
Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee in the
election
meeting on Friday evening at Gurdwara Rakab Ganj.
The earlier president, Manjit Singh GK, had resigned from his post in December over allegations of corruption.
Sirsa, who is also a BJP MLA, was the general secretary of the DSGMC earlier. He is a SAD spokesperson and is known for his proximity to SAD chief Sukhbir Badal.
Manjit Singh GK,
Sirsa
and other DSGMC office-bearers had resigned on December 6 and DSGMC executive members had passed a resolution to hold a new poll of the office-bearers after which a letter was sent to the directorate, gurdwara elections, to hold election within three weeks.
The development was also seen as turf war between GK and Sirsa.
In the meeting, GK reiterated that he decided to resign due to these allegations and he would not hold any religious office till he is cleared of all the allegations levelled by his opponents.
After a series of hiccups and some legal wrangling, the election was finally held on Friday. Harmeet Singh Kalka, earlier senior vice-president, was elected general secretary and Ranjit Kaur was elected senior vice-president.
All the office bearers and executive members were elected unanimously. Kulwant Singh Baath and Harvinder Singh KP were elected junior vice-president and joint secretary, respectively. SAD MP Balwinder Singh Bhunder was present during the election meeting as party observer.
