Watch: 175-year-old Ganga bridge collapses in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao

LUCKNOW: A venerable British-era traffic bridge, which had remained shuttered for the past four years, collapsed into the Ganga River in Shuklaganj area of Unnao on Monday night. This bridge, situated between Kanpur and Unnao districts, caused considerable stir in the vicinity.The bridge, constructed in 1874 by the Oudh and Rohilkhand Limited Company during British rule, had stood for nearly 150 years.In 2021, substantial fissures emerged on the Kanpur side of the bridge, specifically in piers numbered 2, 10, 17, and 22, necessitating its closure to traffic. Barricades were installed on both the Kanpur and Unnao sides to restrict access.The bridge, spanning 800 metres, was constructed under the supervision of Resident engineer S.B Newton and assistant engineer E Wedgard. Though designed with a centurial lifespan, it endured for 150 years before its structural integrity began to falter.The bridge was officially closed at midnight on April 5, 2021. A scientific team from Delhi assessed the bridge for potential reopening, estimating restoration costs at 29.5 cr rupees. However, the local administration opted for closure.Between Monday night and Tuesday morning, a segment of the bridge suddenly plunged into the Ganga River near a central pillar. Onlookers documented the collapse, sharing footage on social media, triggering widespread concern.The administration is presently undertaking demolition of the collapsed section, considering the safety of river vessels and bathers below. Simultaneously, authorities are deliberating preservation strategies for the intact portions of the structure.
