LUCKNOW: The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the bypoll date for the Ghosi assembly constituency in Uttar Pradesh, which became vacant after the former Samajwadi Party MLA Dara Singh joined the BJP last month.

The last date for nomination is August 17, and the scrutiny of nominations will take place on August 18.

Candidates can withdraw their names on August 21, while the constituency will go to polls on September 5.

The ECI will count votes on September 8, and the entire process will be completed by September 10.

Chandrashekhar, the Chief Electoral Officer in charge, stated, "Due to the by-election in the Ghosi assembly constituency, the Model Code of Conduct will remain effective in the district of Mau."

In the previous year's assembly election, Ghosi, which boasts more than 4.3 lakh registered voters, only witnessed a voter turnout of 58.59%. Nonetheless, Dara Singh Chauhan secured a comfortable victory with a margin of 22,216 votes against his nearest rival, Vijay Kumar Rajbhar.

Chauhan, an OBC leader, managed to garner 1.08 lakh votes.
