Man held with Rs6cr weed at airport
Lucknow: Immigration officials at Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport (CCSIA), Lucknow, detained a Saharanpur resident returning from Bangkok after his unusually short one-day trip raised suspicion. A subsequent investigation led to the recovery of high-grade hydroponic weed worth over Rs 6 crore from his baggage, resulting in his arrest.According to the Bureau of Immigration, passenger data for AirAsia flight FD-146 from Bangkok to Lucknow was scrutinized ahead of the aircraft's arrival. During this analysis, one traveller stood out due to an abnormal travel pattern. The passenger, identified as Sanawwar, a resident of Deoband in Saharanpur, had flown to Bangkok on Sunday and returned the very next day—an itinerary that immediately caught the attention of authorities. When the flight landed on Monday, immigration teams identified and intercepted him for detailed profiling. Officers questioned him about his brief stay abroad, which offered no plausible explanation. "During interrogation, we also examined his mobile phone, which contained information indicating that he was being used as a carrier to transport contraband into India," an official source said. Following this discovery, immigration authorities handed him over to the customs Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) for a thorough baggage check.
During the AIU examination, officials found seven vacuum-sealed pouches filled with green flowering and fruiting tops suspected to be hydroponic weed, a potent variant of marijuana cultivated using advanced techniques. The total quantity seized was 6.2 kg, with an estimated market value of approximately Rs 6.5 crore.
