Lakhimpur Kheri violence case live updates: Union minister's son arrested after 12 hours of questioning

The Uttar Pradesh Police issued a fresh notice to junior home minister Ajay Mishra Teni’s son Ashish, asking him to appear before it by 11 am on Saturday in connection with the Lakhimpur Kheri violence that left eight dead. Ashish missed his summons for Friday. Maintaining that Ashish wasn’t involved in Tikunia violence and he has ample proof to establish this, Teni said his son would present himself before the investigative agencies on Saturday.

Rejecting the SIT and the inquiry commission set up by the Uttar Pradesh government to probe the Lakhimpur Kheri violence, the SKM on Friday said that it will call for a nationwide 'rail roko' protest on October 18 if its demands are not fulfilled. The Samyukt Kisan Morcha has been demanding that Union Minister of State (MoS) for Home Ajay Mishra be sacked and his son Ashish Mishra arrested in connection with the October 3 violence in Lakhimpur Kheri.

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday said no arrest will be made without evidence in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case and termed opposition leaders heading to meet the bereaved families as “no goodwill messengers”. (PTI)

Transferring probe into the “brutal” murder of eight persons including four farmers at Lakhimpur Kheri to the CBI “may not be the solution”, the Supreme Court Fridays said while expressing dissatisfaction with the steps taken by the Uttar Pradesh government so far in the case which has triggered a political storm. Senior Congress leader and former Law Minister Ashwani Kumar on Friday welcomed the observation made by the Supreme Court while taking suo-motu cognisance of the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case and said that the court exploring an alternative investigation mechanism is a vote of no confidence in the Uttar Pradesh government investigation agency. Leader of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Rajya Sabha member Manoj Jha, on Friday, attacking MoS Ajay Teni over the Lakhimpur Kheri incident said the ordinary people cannot feel safe if such people occupy the home ministry and sought prime minister Narendra Modi's intervention in the matter. (ANI)

Assuring that people involved in Lakhimpur Kheri violence will be punished, UP law minister Brajesh Pathak on Friday said the matter is sub judice and the opposition parties should not politicize the incident. Speaking to ANI, Pathak said, "The UP government is conducting an independent investigation and the people involved in the violence will be punished."

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Friday met the family of Daljit Singh, a farmer who was killed in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence, in Bahraich. "Till the resignation of the Minister of State for Home Affairs is not done, justice will not be given to these victims' families," Yadav said. (ANI)

Expressing displeasure over a tweet posted by a media organisation which falsely claimed that Chief Justice of India (CJI) N V Ramana had met the kin of victims of Lakhmipur Kheri violence, the Supreme Court Friday said it respects the media and their independence but this is “not at all fair”.
