Jolly–Gayatri enter Syed Modi’s pre-quarters with gritty win
Lucknow: Top-seeded Indian women's doubles pair Trisha Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand made a brilliant start to their campaign with a thrilling victory to secure a pre-quarterfinal spot at the Syed Modi India International HSBC World Tour Super 300 Badminton Championship 2025 at Uttar Pradesh Badminton Academy on Tuesday. Meanwhile, in men's doubles, last year's runners-up and second seeds Sai Pratheek K and Prithvi Krishnamurthy Roy also advanced to the next round with a comfortable win.
In the most exciting women's doubles match of the main draw, defending champions Trisha Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand defeated Malaysia's Cheng Su Hui and Tan Jing Yi 19-21, 22-20, 21-9 in a hard-fought battle lasting 1 hour and 14 minutes. After leading early in the first game, Trisha and Gayatri slipped but bounced back brilliantly, claiming the next two games in tough contests. The Indian duo, bronze medallists at the Commonwealth Games, showed remarkable composure under pressure.
In men's doubles, Sai Pratheek K and Prithvi Krishnamurthy Roy eased past India's Swarnaraj Bora and Nibir Ranjan 21-8, 21-17.
In women's doubles, UP's Shruti Mishra and her partner Priya Konjengbam advanced to the next round with a convincing win. However, another UP pair, Samriddhi Singh and Tanisha Singh, exited in the first round. In their opening match, Shruti and Priya defeated Samriddhi and Reeva 21-8, 21-11. Fourth-seeded Ukraine pair Polina Buhrova and Yevheniia Kantemyr beat India's Taneesha Singh and Sakshi Gahlawat 21-9, 21-19.
In men's doubles, fifth-seeded Indian pair MR Arjun and Hariharan Amsakarunan recorded a comfortable 21-11, 21-13 victory over India's Ayush Makhija and Sujay Tamboli. Chinese Taipei's fourth-seeded duo Huang Jui-Hsuan and Zhi-Wei He defeated India's Shashank Chhetri and Nitin Kumar 21-19, 21-15, while India's Viplav Kuvale and Viraj Kuvale edged past compatriots Aditya Diwakar and Kevin Thangam 22-20, 16-21, 21-19 in a thriller.
In the qualifiers, several Indian players delivered excellent performances to secure places in the main draw. These included Abhinav Thakur, Orjit Chaliha, Arya and Bharat Raghav in men's singles; Prakriti Bharat, Adita Rao and Alisha Nayak in women's singles; and Mithilesh P Krishnan and Varna, Vishakha Toppo and Bhavya Chabda, C Lalremsanga and Tarini Suri, and Nitin HV and Srinidhi Narayan in mixed doubles.
In men's doubles qualifiers, Bhavya Chabda and Param Chaudhary, Mayank Rana and Aryan, Asith Surya and Ganesh, and Ayush Agarwal and Daksh Gautam advanced. In women's doubles qualifiers, Aarthi Sara Sunil and V Vishwanath, Jenith and Likhita Srivastava, and VR Nardhana and Riddhivanshi Ramaswamy recorded wins.
