Jaw deformity with swelling could be odontogenic tumour, warn experts
Lucknow: Dental experts have cautioned that long-standing jaw deformity accompanied by swelling could be a sign of a rare odontogenic tumour and should not be ignored.Addressing a two-day seminar organised by the department of oral pathology and microbiology at King George's Medical University (KGMU), Ranchi-based oral health expert Dr Narendra Nath Singh said such tumours arise from tooth-forming cells and can become serious if diagnosis is delayed. He stressed that timely investigation and treatment can help control the disease. Faculty member Dr Susmita Saxena highlighted that persistent oral ulcers or red skin lesions around the mouth that do not heal within 10 to 15 days despite medication may indicate rare diseases affecting the oral and perioral region. "Such symptoms should be evaluated by a specialist to rule out serious conditions," she said. Experts advised that early consultation and diagnostic tests play a key role in preventing complications and ensuring effective treatment outcomes. Dean of the dental faculty Dr G K Singh and other faculty members were also present at the academic programme, which focused on awareness and early detection of rare oral diseases.
