LUCKNOW: An Income Tax officer's family was duped of jewellery worth lakhs of rupee by a man posing as a lottery agent. The incident occurred in Vivek Khand locality of Gomtinagar on Monday evening.
The officer's daughter was injured when she tried to nab the miscreant who was fleeing on a motorcycle. The girl was dragged for about 500 metres along with the bike.
The officer was identified as Sharad Kapoor, a resident of 3/520, Vivek Khand. Around 7.30pm on Monday, a man posing as a lottery agent pressed Kapoor's doorbell. At that time, Kapoor's mother Beena and his daughter Deepvanti were present in the house.
The impostor told them that they have won a small flat and Rs 5 lakh in cash through a lottery which can only avail by paying Rs 70,000. Deepvanti got suspicious and told the man that since his father was not home, they could not give the money.
The miscreant then dialled a number from his mobile and claimed speaking to Sharad Kapoor. The conversation made by the miscreant was such that a message should reach Beena and Deepvanti that Kapoor was aware of the lottery agent reaching his house and asking for the money.
Convinced, Beena told the miscreant that since didn't have money, she will give her gold ornaments.
The miscreant then asked Beena and Deepvanti to bring a passport size photo of Sharad Kapoor. As Beena turned to bring the photo, he tried to flee. Deepvanti gave him a chase but didn't succeed.
A neighbour who saw Deepvanti in trouble even tried to take aim at the miscreant from his licensed gun desisted from doing so since he feared that the shot may hit Deepvanti.
In the melee, the police sources said that the miscreant's mobile fell from the pocket. The mobile had been taken in the custody by the police and efforts were on to nab the miscreant.
