Eight killed as car runs over a group helping accident victims on highway
Lucknow: Eight people, including two brothers, were killed after a speeding car ran over bystanders who had gathered to help victims of a motorcycle collision in Ambedkar Nagar district just after Sunday midnight.
The first incident occurred at 12.10 am near Ashrafpur Bhuwa brick kiln on the Akbarpur–Jalalpur road, about 17 km from the district headquarters under Jalalpur Kotwali limits.
According to police, the sequence began when two motorcycles collided head-on, leaving three riders critically injured. The injured were identified as Kaifi (32) from Lorpur Tajan, and two brothers —Aditya Kumar (25) and Divyanshu (22) — residents of Jainapur in the Sammanpur area, who were returning from a wedding.
Hearing the crash, several locals rushed to the spot and began assisting the injured, attempting to move them to safety and arrange transport to a hospital.
However, moments later, a speeding car lost control and ploughed into the group, crushing multiple people before overturning into a roadside ditch. The car driver fled the scene immediately after the incident.
Police and locals launched a rescue operation and rushed the injured to Community Health Centre (CHC), Jalalpur, where doctors declared six persons dead on arrival. Among the deceased were Aditya and Divyanshu, the two brothers who were lying injured after the motorcycle crash and were run over by the car.
Two other critically injured victims were referred to the district hospital and later shifted to Tanda Medical College, where they succumbed during the treatment.
The other deceased have been identified as Kaifi (32), Uttam Kumar (24), Lalchand (24), Raju Gupta (32), Sahil (28), and Indresh (30). All were residents of Ambedkar Nagar.
Police said that apart from the motorcycle riders, other victims were among those who had stopped to help after the initial crash. Bodies have been sent for post-mortem, and statements of eyewitnesses are being recorded.
Superintendent of Police, Ambedkar Nagar, Prachi Singh, said all necessary legal formalities were being completed and families of the deceased have been informed.
