Atiq Ahmed News Live Updates: Police cavalcade with gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad leaves for Gujarat jail

Gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad, who was sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment in the 2006 Umesh Pal kidnapping case by a court in Prayagraj on Tuesday, will be taken back to Sabarmati Central Jail in Gujarat, a senior prison official said. Ahmad was brought from Sabarmati Jail by road for the hearing in an MP-MLA court here. He was kept at the Naini Central Jail in Prayagraj before the hearing.

An MP-MLA court in Prayagraj on Tuesday held gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed and two others guilty in the 2006 Umesh Pal kidnapping case, and sentenced them to life imprisonment.

Ahmad's brother Khalid Azim alias Ashraf and six others have been acquitted in the case.Special MP-MLA court judge Dinesh Chandra Shukla held Ahmad, Saulat Hanif, a lawyer, and Dinesh Pasi guilty in the case, government counsel Gulab Chandra Agrahari said.

The three were pronounced guilty under Indian Penal Code section 364-A (kidnapping or abduction in order to murder), Agrahari said.

The maximum sentence under the section is death sentence.Chief minister Yogi Adityanath had last month charged the Samajwadi Party with garlanding mafias like Atiq Ahmad and had said in the state assembly that "mafia (Atiq Ahmad) ko mitti me mila denge (will destroy the mafia)."

Ahmed is the main accused in the Umesh Pal murder case. Umesh Pal, the prime witness in the 2005 murder of BSP MLA Raju Pal, and his two security personnel were shot dead in Prayagraj on February 24 this year. Atiq is likely to reach Prayagraj by today evening after a journey of over 30 hours.

The case: How did it happen?

After the killing of BSP MLA Raju Pal on January 25, 2005, Umesh Pal, then a zila panchayat member, told police he was a witness to the murder. Umesh alleged that when he refused to buckle under pressure from Atiq Ahmed to retract, he was kidnapped at gunpoint on February 28, 2006. FIR lodged on July 5, 2007, against Atiq, his brother Ashraf and four unidentified people; chargesheet mentioned 11 accused. Barring Atiq, sibling Ashraf and one Farhan, the remaining accused are out on bail. Two people linked to Umesh Pal's the murder this February killed in separate encounters with police; one suspect arrested, bounty announced for information on six others, including Atiq's wife Shaista Parveen.

Cops keeping close watch on Atiq's convoy

Each of the cops in the escort party wore a bulletproof jacket and double-checked their weapons before boarding their respective vehicles. UP's additional DGP (law and order) Prashant Kumar told TOI late Sunday, “We are closely watching the convoy's movement. There's sufficient deployment for their security."

A team of 23 cops accompanying Atiq

A 23-strong police team from Prayagraj reached the prison in a convoy of four vehicles, including two prison vans and as many SUVs, at 9.30am. The police carried with them a court order for his custody. "We handed Atiq over after taking legal opinion," said deputy SP JS Chavda of Sabarmati jail. An officer in the escort team said an extra prison van had been brought as back-up for the 1,300km return journey to Prayagraj.

A UP Police team on Sunday took custody of incarcerated gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed from Ahmedabad's Sabarmati jail and set off by road for Prayagraj, where he is to be produced in a special court on Tuesday to face its verdict in the 2007 Umesh Pal kidnapping and criminal conspiracy case. Ahmed, who has 100-odd criminal cases against his name, screamed "hatya (murder)" as he was being escorted out of jail, insinuating a plot to kill him in custody.
