KOZHIKODE: CPM leader and former MLA James Mathew slammed the MD of Hanveev (Kerala State Handloom Development Corporation) and used offensive words against him at a protest meeting organized by CITU in front of Hanveev's office in Kannur demanding the payment of salaries due to workers.
Mathew repeatedly called the MD of Hanveev, which functions under the industries department, a 'beggar' (thendi) during his speech. "The workers earn around Rs 5,000-6,000 and the maximum dues are around Rs 30,000.
But this beggar, who is taking Rs 2 lakh as salary, doesn't care about that money. I'm telling this publicly that if the dues are not paid before Monday, the MD, who is a beggar, will not be allowed to step foot inside the office," he said.
He asked what word he should use to call a person who earns Rs 2 lakh/month but has kept the file on payment of dues of Rs 4000 to Rs 5000 to employees pending.
Mathew said that the MD was taking a monthly salary which is equal to the salaries of 25 employees. "Why is he taking that salary? What service is he delivering here and what benefit is the corporation getting from him? Is he not ashamed to take Rs 2 lakh as salary," he asked.
Mathew said Hanveev was not paying salaries to the employees for the past two-and-a-half months. "It's not the MD alone. There are other six-seven officials in the corporation's administration who are earning lakhs of rupees. If they have any bit of shame, they should quit their jobs and do something else. They have all proved that they are unfit to occupy their posts," he said.
